I’ve had a fondness for Holmes and Watson since my first Conan Doyle mystery, but now fans young and old can enjoy a new twist to the legend: a series aimed at ages 9-12. These books tell of Holmes’ army of street urchins who help him with his investigations in London. The group, mostly orphans, is led by Ozzie and Wiggins, and they take pride in their fact-finding roles as the Baker Street Irregulars. In the first book of the series, The Fall of the Amazing Zalindas, the boys (and Pilar, the brave granddaughter of the circus’s fortune teller) investigate the suspicious death of a family of tightrope walkers. The twists, turns, and clues will keep young sleuths turning the pages. (And long-time Holmes fans may wonder, like me, if the brilliant and logical Ozzie might have a relationship to Sherlock other than just employee/employer… If you’ve read these books and have your suspicions, let’s talk!) I also got a big kick out of the historical notes at the end of the book— Cockney rhyming slang how-tos, tips on the art of disguise, and a guide to Victorian London transportation. So far there are three books in the series, but hopefully there will be more! ~Tegan
