This is a novel about music — specifically opera — and the power it exerts on our lives. And just like great opera, The Bells is full of melodrama, romance, heartbreak and larger than life characters.

Born in 18th century Switzerland, Moses Froben has been blessed with extraordinary hearing and the voice of an angel. When he is almost murdered by his priest/father, 10-year-old Moses is rescued by two traveling monks and taken to their abbey. It doesn’t take long for the choirmaster to recognize the boy’s gifts, and Moses becomes the star of the abbey’s choir.

The novel follows Moses as his voice develops and his life takes an unexpected path. He ultimately becomes a great musico, performing all over Europe for royalty, but he also is careful to open his windows so the peasants who can’t afford the theater may also enjoy and be moved by the music.
As someone who always cries at the opera, this historical novel seems to have been written just for me. ~Patti
