Lucy is a 26-year-old children’s librarian who is feeling discontented with her life and job. The bright spot in her day is 10-year-old Ian, her favorite patron and most voracious reader. Lucy loves recommending books to him and hearing his thoughts on what he has read. However, his fundamentalist mother has given a very strict and extensive set of instructions on what he is and is not allowed to read. Ian’s bookishness and lack of interest in sports has led his parents to become concerned that he might be gay, and they enroll him in an anti-gay bible camp on the weekends. With this Ian becomes increasingly withdrawn and sullen and Lucy grows worried about him. When she finds him camped out in the library one morning, she agrees to drive him to his grandmother’s, and it quickly becomes clear that she is actually helping him run away. Lucy struggles between knowing that what she is doing is wrong and her strong desire to protect Ian. As their journey reaches it’s end, Lucy concludes, “I no longer believe I can save people. But books on the other hand: I do still believe that books can save you.” This is a thought-provoking, funny and entertaining book, and I highly recommend it. ~Torrie
