Steve Vail used to be a skilled and smart FBI agent but got tired of
the governmental bureaucracy which put policy ahead of people. He now
is able to call his own shots working as a bricklayer in Chicago. One
day he is on a roof repairing a chimney when FBI assistant deputy
director, Kate Bannon, joins him and asks that he help out the bureau
with a case. A secret organization calling itself the Rubaco Pentad, is
blackmailing the FBI. They are not only demanding millions, but they
are also showing no hesitancy in killing anyone which will further
their cause to extort and humiliate. Steve is promised complete
autonomy and the resources he needs if he will come on board and save
the day.
This thriller just feels like it was written for fans of Lee Child’s
“Jack Reacher” series containing all of the qualities that make me
reach for each new Child novel: a charismatic hero who prefers control
of his life over accolades; a storyline with plenty of twists and
turns; and a pace that will keep you up far too late. And the ending
left plenty of room for more Steve Vail adventures!
