A pair of crows has nested in my backyard each of the last two springs, leaving behind a baby crow that needs to be protected as it struggles through the first weeks of life. While my dogs did not enjoy being swooped down upon every time they went outside, I found myself fascinated with these intelligent and intriguing birds. When I saw that Seattle author Lyanda Lynn Haupt had written a book titled Crow Planet, I couldn’t wait to pick it up. To my delight, I found the book goes well beyond being informative about crows. It also tells of the author’s journey to discover nature in our urban environment. Through her writing, Haupt encourages us to pay closer attention to the world around us and to live thoughtfully in it. Along the way she shares wonderful stories about the crows in her West Seattle neighborhood. Anyone who thinks crows are nothing more than a big, loud annoyance should spend a little bit of time watching them. I am certain you will come away with a different opinion. This book is fun and touching and I know the next time I’m out walking in my neighborhood, I will pay a little bit more attention to the nature that surrounds me. ~Torrie
