Darren Farrell's new picture book about Doug-Dennis, a wacky, talking sheep, and Ben-Bobby, his best friend (an elephant with hair and a baseball cap instead of big elephant ears) makes me giggle every time I think about it.
As the two friends start a spectacular outing at the circus, Doug-Dennis eats Ben-Bobby's popcorn, then lies about it.  It was an innocent, mindless fib, but "it soon grew great big"-- and Doug-Dennis literally gets carried away by it, all the way to outer space.  Space is filled with other folks still attached to their fibs, including some hilarious ones (a dog says, "Who went pee?  Where?" and a little girl claims, "My nose is filled with green jelly beans."). Being among the stars and liars is lonely, though. Doug-Dennis misses his friend, and he wishes he hadn't tricked his friend, so he tells the truth, and that sends him speeding back to the circus and a happy ending. The illustrations and story are full of whimsy and wit, and even though there's a great lesson about truth and friendship, the lesson doesn't get in the way of the fun.  I hope to see more from Darren Farrell! ~Tegan
