Discuss the novel The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga with our Saturday night drop-in book club. We meet every other month, usually the last Saturday at 8:00pm. Our book choices are usually a little edgier than the traditional book club fare, and our discussions are focused yet fun. After about an hour talking about the book, most of us head to a bar or coffee shop to socialize. This helps us spend our book club time talking openly and in-depth about the book, then gives us a great opportunity to bond with fellow readers afterwards. Everyone is welcome to take part in the discussion, and all are encouraged to join us for social time after, too. Remember, they're Saturday nights starting at 8:00. | ||

David Smith, author of If the World Were a Village and If America Were a Village, travels the globe sharing his enthusiastic and innovative approach to teaching and learning about our world community. On October 19 starting at 6:30, he will host an evening of discussion about geography, its place in the curriculum and our lives, and how to make it easy and fun to learn. Smith was a middle school teacher in Cambridge, MA when he got the idea to help his students visualize the world as a village of 100 people. Scaling the discussion of global population so 1% represents one individual makes facts and figures about the world more concrete and understandable for kids (and adults). Smith's latest book, If America Were a Village, takes a similar leap to represent statistics about the United States. It's a powerful and fascinating book, and a very interesting study not just in geography but also psychology... When we picture economic data as applying to individuals, there is an immediacy to the discussion that I just don't get from bar graphs and pie charts. Whether you're an educator, a parent, or a volunteer who works with students, this should be a fun and educational event. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoetby David Mitchell
I became a fan of Mitchell after I read his wildly inventive Cloud Atlas, so I was expecting literary pyrotechnics from his latest. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, the sweeping story of the Dutch East Indies Company in Japan at the turn of the 19th century, reads like a combination of Patrick O'Brien's nautical historical fiction, the exoticism and passion of Shogun, and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" because of a creepy part of the plot. I think good Science Fiction uses an altered reality to reveal something
about the real world that couldn’t be revealed without that altered
setting. Great Science Fiction does this and entertains as well. China
Mieville’s The City and the City is really great Sci-fi. It
begins feeling like a dark, well-written, noir-style mystery – a body
has been found in the city of Beszel, detective Borlu has been assigned
