Book Mixer: How the Dead Dream

Start: March 27, 2010 - 8:00pm

End: March 27, 2010 - 8:00pm

Discuss How the Dead Dream by Lydia Millet with our drop-in, no-guilt Book Mixer group.

We meet every other month, usually the last Saturday at 8:00pm.
Our book choices tend to be a little edgier than the traditional book
club fare, and our discussions are focused yet fun. After about an hour
talking about the book, most of us head to a bar or restaurant to
socialize. This helps us spend our book club time talking openly and
in-depth about the book, then gives us a great opportunity to bond with
fellow readers afterwards.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the discussion, and all are
encouraged to join us for social time after, too. Remember, they're
Saturday nights starting at 8:00.

Howard Frank Mosher: Walking to Gatlinburg

Start: April 11, 2010 - 3:00pm

End: April 11, 2010 - 3:00pm

Vermont storyteller extraordinaire Howard Frank Mosher returns to Queen Anne Books for a presentation about his latest novel, Walking to Gatlinburg.

On Sunday April 11 starting at 3:00, novelist Howard FrankMosher will be presenting his entertaining and informative slide show/talk,“Transforming History into Fiction: the Story of a Born Liar.” Where do the boundaries lie between historyand fiction? How far can a novelist go in appropriating and “transforming” history into fiction? Using his personal slides, and stories from his travels to the old Erie Canal, Pennsylvanian Amish country, the battlefieldat Gettysburg, historical sectors of Richmond, and the Great Smoky and BlueRidge Mountains, Mosher will discuss his use of historical events and characters in his just-released Civil War novel, Walking to Gatlinburg. A spart of his research for the novel, Mosher read more than 100 Civil Wa rhistories and novels – his favorites are Cold Mountain and The Killer Angels – and retraced the entire trek of the novel’s hero, Morgan Kinneson, from northern Vermont to the Smokies.

Howard Frank Mosher is the author of ten acclaimed novels and a travel memoir. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a combination of Ernest Hemingway, Henry David Thoreau, and Jim Harrison,” Mosher is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters LiteratureAward, the New England Book Award, the ACLU Excellence in the Arts Award, andGuggenheim and NEA fellowships. Three ofhis novels have been made into feature films. In a starred review, Kirkus Reviewcalls Walking to Gatlinburg an“expertly written novel . . . in which every word matters.” Publisher’sWeekly praises the novel as “old-fashioned in the best sense . . . an engrossing tale with mass appeal.”

We've hosted Howard Frank Mosher before, so we know that he is hilarious, informative and all-around delightful! We hope you can join us for this afternoon with a true American treasure.

Heather Davis: The Clearing

Start: April 16, 2010 - 6:30pm

End: April 16, 2010 - 6:30pm

Author Heather Davis returns to her neighborhood bookstore to celebrate the release of her second novel for teens, The Clearing. (On-sale date: April 12. We're taking preorders!)

Here's the summary for the magical, romantic new book:

Amy, a sixteen-year-old recovering from an abusive relationship, moves to the country to start a new life with her aunt. All she wants if for everything to be different. In the clearing at the back of Aunt Mae's property, she makes an amazing discovery: Henry, a boy stuck in the endless summer of 1944. Henry and his world become Amy's refuge, and she begins to learn that some moments are worth savoring. But when the past and present come crashing together, both of them must find the courage to face what is meant to be, even if it means losing each other forever.

I can't wait to hear Heather read from this new book-- and get my hands on a finished copy.

Join us for a reading, Q&A, and signing reception with Heather Davis, local talent and all-around fabulous woman! What a way to kick off the weekend!!!

For more information about Heather Davis (plus a link to her blog), check out http://www.heatherdavisbooks.com/index.html.

Emma Hox: Longbourn's Unexpected Matchmaker

End: April 23, 2010 - 6:30pm

What if things had gone differently for Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet?

Local author Emma Hox reimagines Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in her new novel, Longbourn's Unexpected Matchmaker.

Do you love Jane Austen? Are you ready to revisit favorite characters and settings, without any zombies but with plenty of romance? Mark your calendars, air out your dresses or frock coats, and join us for a splendid launch party!

Mrs. Emma Hox will read, answer questions, and sign her novel.

We will serve not-so-sticky sticky toffee pudding and other light oh-so-British nibbles.

Period dress (or creative interpretation of it) is highly encouraged!

For some inspiration and smiles, click to see photos from a fun Pride & Prejudice themed ball hosted in Phoenix by We Make History.

Elinor Lipman: Family Man

Start: May 8, 2010 - 3:00pm

End: May 8, 2010 - 3:00pm

Oh wow!!! We're big fans of Elinor Lipman, so we're thrilled to have her coming to our store for her tour for the paperback release of her latest novel, The Family Man.

Her humorous and heartfelt social satire makes me think that she'll be a hoot in real life-- I can't wait to meet her!

Here's what Entertainment Weekly wrote about The Family Man:

"In The Family Man, a sparkling, sprightly comedy—Elinor Lipman's 10th—dapper Manhattan attorney Henry Archer gets the shock of his life when he realizes the receptionist he's just tipped is none other than his stepdaughter, Thalia, whom he hasn't seen in 25 years. Before long, Thalia's back in his life (ensconced in his maisonette apartment, in fact), and Henry's got his hands full with her, his endlessly chatty ex-wife Denise, a new lover, and the countless others who wander in and out of his elegant Upper West Side brownstone. As always, the pleasure of a Lipman book is not so much the wispy plot but the original, funny, achingly human characters. Grade: A"

That sounds like one heck of a summer read to me.

Join us for an afternoon with Elinor Lipman-- reading, answering questions, signing books, and partaking of delightful refreshments. You'll be glad you did!

The Cider House Rules, Part One: Here in St. Cloud’s
by Peter Parnell, adapted from the novel by John Irving
June 9 – July 11, 2010
And for the icing on our 20th Anniversary cake, we are thrilled to produce The Cider House Rules, Part One: Here in St. Clouds—the
first full-length novel adapted in the Book-It Style™. This is the
story of orphan Homer Wells’ life in a Maine orphanage and his
education under the tutelage of Dr. Larch, who saves not only babies,
but mothers too, by performing illegal abortions when necessary. The
1996 production at Seattle Rep put Book-It on the national theatre map
and we can’t wait to bring this gem from our repertory to the Center
