Book Mixer: The City & the City

Sep 25 2010 8:00 pm

For this meeting, we will discuss a recent Lillian favorite and Hugo Award Winner:  The City & the City

Be sure to join our Book Mixer mailing list if you would like us to mail you an encouraging, thought-provoking email while we're reading-- plus a reminder to come to the discussion.

This no-guilt, drop-in group meets every other month, usually the last Saturday at 8:00pm.

Our book choices tend to be a little edgier than the traditional book club fare, and our discussions are focused yet fun. After about an hour talking about the book, most of us head to a bar or restaurant to socialize. This helps us spend our book club time talking openly and in-depth about the book, then gives us a great opportunity to bond with fellow readers afterwards.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the discussion, and all are
encouraged to join us for social time after, too. Remember, they're
Saturday nights starting at 8:00.

(To sign up for our email list, you can sign up through the "Join our free Email Mailing List" form on this site, or you can call, email us at qaabooks@qwest.net, or come in and visit!)

When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad. To investigate, Borlú must travel from the decaying Beszel to its equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the vibrant city of Ul Qoma. But this is a border crossing like no other, a journey as psychic as it is physical, a seeing of the unseen. With Ul Qoman detective Qussim Dhatt, Borlú is enmeshed in a sordid underworld of nationalists intent on destroying their neighboring city, and unificationists who dream of dissolving the two into one. As the detectives uncover the dead woman’s secrets, they begin to suspect a truth that could cost them more than their lives. What stands against them are murderous powers in Beszel and in Ul Qoma: and, most terrifying of all, that which lies between these two cities.
