There’s something about this fascinating novel for teens that reminds me of a modern gothic. Told in the first person from the point of view of Chloe, the little sister to captivating Ruby, the book stays on the edge of spooky without any trappings of a ghost story. The girls’ mother is a well-known alcoholic in their small New York town, and Ruby has pretty much raised them both. Ruby seems to be able to do anything: convince anyone to do her will, keep her car running on empty, and maybe things even both amazing and dangerous. Chloe’s love for her sister verges on the obsessive, and Ruby’s beauty and magnetism create a charmed life for them both-- maybe more than Chloe realizes. Suma’s gorgeous writing kept me enthralled by these mysterious characters and the world they inhabit. ~Tegan
