Jack Blank and the Imagine Nation by Matt Myklusch
Imagine a place where every superhero, villain, alien, cybergadget and
comic-book fantasy were to come alive — that place would be the Imagine
Nation and it is the extraordinary island where Jack Blank finds out the
truth of his murky origins.
The book opens when Jack is 12-years-old and living at St. Barnaby’s
Home for the Hopeless, Abandoned, Forgotten, and Lost which, according
to it’s sign, has been “crushing the spirit of childhood since 1898”.
Jack is known as a trouble maker because weird things happen when he is
around, but the day he is almost killed by a Robo-Zombie and then
spirited away to the island country known as Imagine Nation is beyond
anything even Jack’s fantasy world can comprehend.
It is the belief of Jack’s rescuer, Jazen (an android), that the boy has
untapped superpowers and therefore belongs with the other superheroes
of Imagine Nation where he will fight along with it’s citizens to
protect the planet Earth from the Rustuv. Rustuvs are parasites which
take over flesh and blood bodies, and turns them into machines. “Veins
turn into circuits, blood turns into oil… the skin mummifies, flaking
away to reveal rusted metal bones.”
This first book in a planned trilogy is the best novel for 8-12 year
olds I’ve read in a long time! It is exciting and clever; and Jack is a
smart and likeable superhero in training. On sale August 3rd! ~Patti
