In Jacqueline Winspear's eighth novel, life takes a new direction for Maisie Dobbs, private investigator, psychologist, and former nurse in World War I. Set in Britain in the period between the World Wars, this volume finds Maisie Dobbs financially independent and feeling the need for new challenges. So when the British Secret Service asks her to work undercover as a philosophy teacher at a college in Cambridge, she readily agrees to take on the task. Maisie's job is to observe and watch for any activity that would be subversive to the Crown. But when the college's founder and director is murdered her job takes on a whole new aspect.
A Lesson In Secrets seems to be all about change, both in the signs of the still unforeseen World War II and in many personal aspects of Maisie Dobbs’ life. I loved this book. Jacqueline Winspear's writing has continued to make Maisie Dobbs a character with depth and interest that keeps me looking forward to when the next book comes out. ~Mara
