Ivan "Van" Georg and Francesca Aldo-Valbelli are brought together by novels. From this mutual love, they decide to open a small bookstore in Paris. They carry only the most exquisite collection of literature selected by a secret committee of authors. To their delight and surprise, The Novel Bookstore opens to a warm reception and a profitable start. But as with many things in life, this success makes others unhappy, and soon the bookstore, its owners, and the secret committee members find themselves under attack.
I find it hard to describe why I love this book so much. I keep thinking the beautiful subtlety of this book. It is full of love, tragedy, longing, inspiration, and mystery. One of my favorite parts is Van and Francesca's discussions on how literature inspires them and how yes, it is one of life's great joys— but that it is more than that, "listen carefully: it is a way to learn to live." ~Mara
