Charlie Clark and his father, Drummond, have just finished meeting with a social worker trying to determine what comes next in caring for the elder Clark who is suffering from the early effects of Alzheimer’s disease. As they near his apartment, Drummond starts running trying to catch a gas worker. Charlie hurries after his father certain the old man has lost his remaining faculties. The gas man gets away so the Clarks head back to the apartment where they barely escape with their lives when the apartment blows up due to a ‘gas leak’. Charlie is willing to believe the fire department’s explanation for the explosion; Drummond thinks otherwise.

Soon after, a harrowing gun battle ensues. Charlie thinks his gambling debts have caught up with him but soon realizes his father is reacting to these strange occurrences like they happen everyday. Turns out Drummond used to be an elite operative working for the government and it is actually his former job that is haunting the Clarks. The spies are nervous Drummond will, because of his deteriorating mental condition, inadvertently give away sensitive and damaging secrets.

It’s been a while since I read a “spy” novel complete with moles, hidden bank accounts, seemingly impossible situations easily conquered by a super-spy and, of course, a beautiful woman. Totally fun, totally addicting. ~Patti
