I'm so excited to have discovered this mystery series. It's moody and atmospheric, and it has a great main character who is strong and independent. Ruth Galloway is a forensic archaeologist who lives in a remote Norfolk region in a cottage by herself with her cats, and she likes it that way.

In The Crossing Places, Detective Inspector Harry Nelson seeks out Ruth Galloway's expert opinion in identifying a body in the desolate marshland. DCI Nelson is hoping it will bring closure to an unsolved missing child case from ten years ago. The body turns out to be from the Iron Age, which would normally completely absorb Ruth's attention. However, when another child goes missing she finds herself drawn into helping DCI Nelson. Steeped in history, myth, and madness this mystery completely absorbed my attention.

There are currently two Ruth Galloway mysteries, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. The Janus Stone is a gripping mystery as well but I highly recommend that you start at the beginning with The Crossing Places. ~Mara
