The Third Rail is Michael Harvey's
third Michael Kelly thriller and it is truly a gritty page turning
Chicago story.
Michael Kelly is an ex cop turned private
detective who can't seem to stay out of trouble, and in this case the
trouble starts when Kelly witnesses the murder of a woman on the L-
train platform. About an hour later a second woman is gunned down while
she rides the train and the next thing Kelly knows the killer is
actually calling him on his cell phone. The killer clearly knows Michael
Kelly; is able to draw him in and lead him along, at least at first.
This
whirlwind pursuit brings up painful memories of Kelly's youth, mixing
in Chicago politics, the threat of chemical weapon attack, and the
kidnapping of Kelly's girlfriend, Rachel Swenson. Michael Harvey draws
you in and never lets you go till the end and even then you know there
is unfinished business. The author also did an amazing job in capturing
the darker and dirtier aspects of Chicago, and having grown up there it
felt right and true. I have not read the first two of the Michael Kelly
series, The Chicago Way and The Fifth Floor but did not
find feel lost or out of the loop in any way, however Michael Harvey has
drawn me in and you can bet that I will be reading his first two and
any future Michael Harvey thriller's. ~Mara
