The Time in Between is a sweeping
saga of the life of a young woman, Sira Quirogan, living in the
turbulent times of Spain and Morocco in the late 1930's. Growing up with
her single mother in Madrid, Sira starts sweeping the floors of the
atelier where her mother works as a seamstress and by fourteen is an
apprentice at the same establishment. As a young woman she is swept off
her feet by a handsome stranger and runs off to Morocco leaving behind
her mother and fiancé. Soon, however, she finds herself abandoned,
penniless, and heartbroken. Sira must discover her own strength to
survive in the world and make a life for herself using her skills as a
seamstress to create beautiful clothing.
I loved this book. I was
completely swept up into Sira's life in Spain and Morrocco and all the
interesting characters that come into her life. This book is rich with
the turbulent history of the Spanish Civil War and the onset of World
War II. Maria Duenas is a wonderful storyteller, weaving a tale with
history, intrigue, love and betrayal. ~Mara
