Here’s my quick disclaimer: this is not a self-help book, even though the title might suggest otherwise. Former Parade magazine editor-in-chief Kravitz has written a memoir of one year of his adult life in which he connects with family and friends he’s overlooked during his intensely busy career as a journalist, husband and father. Suddenly out of work, 56-year-old Kravitz takes stock of the people he’s lost touch with—Aunt Fern (living out her days in a nursing home with no family or friends who visit her), a childhood baseball buddy whose daughter is kidnapped and killed in Iraq. There’s nothing extraordinary in these stories, and that’s what makes them so enjoyable and emotionally honest. Kravitz has written a deeply personal memoir that resonates perfectly thanks to straight-forward writing, and story telling that every reader will appreciate. If you’re looking for a break from your fiction reading, I recommend this book. ~Wendee
